Christian Jones or J.R. "Ego" Ferguson?

As National Signing Day creeps ever so closer (and I do mean creeps, Wednesday can't get here fast enough) there are still a sizable group of recruits that have yet to commit to a school.  Some of these recruits are projected to make a significant impact at the school they choose.  Florida State is one of the teams that will receive the biggest impact, positive and/or negative, based on the decisions of a few high school seniors from around the country.  Currently ranked 12th in the most recently updated Rivals.com Team Rankings, Florida State is projected to finish as high as 3rd or 4th if everything breaks their way on Wednesday.

Two of the players that are currently uncommitted but that are considering Florida State are 5-star OLB Christian Jones and 4-Star DE J.R. Ferguson.  Both players are physical specimens that more than exceed the desired physical measurables for their respective positions.  Both have been compared to successful NFL players that were also big time college athletes as well.  And both players play at a position of need for Florida State University.  However, the purpose of this post is to determine which one, if I could only have one, would be the player I'd like to commit to the 'Noles.

Now at first reckoning this would seem to be a no-brainer: just take the 5-star, the higher rated player and more coveted player and be done with it; but I don't believe it's that easy.

First, many of FSU's problems in 2009 and the biggest factor for a 7-6 finish were on the defensive side of the ball.  That would seem like another factor in Jones' favor but taking a closer look at last season there was a definite problem on the defensive line.  Even with the additions of Jaccobi McDaniel and Marcus White the Noles couldn't get any kind of pass rush generated and thus exposed the weak secondary.  A great defense is anchored up front by the line as they generating a good pass rush with just the front four, allowing the rest of the defense to cover for only 3-4 seconds and making everyone's life easier.  A great pass-rusher like Ferguson would really have a great impact on the entire defense as a whole.

Secondly, the 'Noles have long thrived on a two-deep rotation on the defensive line.  This allows the d-line to stay fresher throughout the game and thus able to make a bigger impact late in the game.  Unfortunately for the 'Noles and for the defense there just weren't enough quality players on the roster to allow them to effectively play this technique.  This caused the players to wear down quicker and the entire defense to suffer as a result.  Ferguson is 6'3", 273lbs with the skill set to play both inside and outside on the defensive line which only makes that two-deep rotation even more effective.

Third, Florida State has continually made a recruiting impact in the state of Florida, but has recently attempted to stretch it's reach out even farther around the Southeast.  Of the two prospects Ferguson would have more of an impact.  Jones currently attends high school in Winter Park, FL near Orlando, FL which is already a fertile recruiting ground for the 'Noles.  Ferguson, however, goes to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia.  Hargrave has produced many athletes such as Tory Holt, Josh Smith, Josh Howard and Brandon Albert of the Kansas City Chiefs.  Having Ferguson on board to allow the 'Noles to tap into all the talent that flows through that school would only help the team into the future.

As I've illustrated it's much more complicated than just taking the best player according to the rankings and moving forward.  Because of all the reasons illustrated here I believe Ferguson may be the better fit for the 'Noles and their current roster.

Captain's Prediction:

Christian Jones - FSU (yeah, I won't be too upset)
J.R. Ferguson - Miami

Seminoles vs. Bulldogs: On the Recruiting Trail

Quite a battle is raging between the Seminoles and Bulldogs, but it's not on any field, court, or diamond; It's actually on the "streets" of the recruiting trail. The two teams and coaching staffs have ended up as finalists on the lists of a couple of high impact freshman, much like they were last year with Orson Charles and Greg Reid (Charles went to UGA, Reid chose FSU, swapping home states).

I fully expect the players that both the 'Noles and 'Dawgs are pursuing to have impacts much like those two last year, the big question is: "who will be the team that benefits from that impact?"

Coach Richt's tenure at Florida State allowed him to really get a foothold on recruiting in the state of Florida and he has used that foothold to continually travel down to Florida and bring talent up to Athens. As Coach Johnson would tell you, Coach Richt's recruiting prowess is probably the #1 factor that has led to UGA becoming what they are today.

Well for one player that is still uncommitted Coach Richt is hoping his Florida ties really make a big difference. That player is Christian Green. Christian is an Athlete (played QB in High School but projects to WR in college) from the Tampa area that has good size (6'2" and 200lbs), Speed (4.46), and the pedigree (his cousin is former Florida State standout WR E.G. Green). With those factors in his favor Christian is expected to make a smooth transition to WR and make an immediate impact at the next level.

Christian took an official visit to Athens to see the campus and visit with some of UGA's players.  After the visit he had this to say about his time spent there:

"Georgia is definitely still in the picture," he said. "I just really liked the environment there, they are about winning. Coach Richt has helped to change the program around, and he has made more changes, as they are trying to become a top, elite team. I liked that about them. I like their entire coaching staff and how they go about doing their business."

However FSU has the advantage with Green as the 'Noles will receive his final official visit this weekend just a few days before National Signing Day.  With the timing of that visit and the ties that Green has to FSU most recruiting experts expect Green to don a 'Noles cap on February 3rd.

Rivals: ATH Christian Green - It's FSU and Georgia here, and it would be a stunner if he went against all the ties he has to the Seminoles.

Warchant.Com:

WR Christian Green / 6-2, 200 / Tampa, FL (Catholic)
Ranking: Four-star / No. 7 rated athlete

Predicted School: Florida State / Confidence Factor: 85% (up 15%)
Green is one of the most dynamic athletes in the Southeast. The high school quarterback projects as a wide receiver in college and it seems likely that the transition will be a smooth one (see Bert Reed, Anquan Boldin, Peter Warrick). As with Christian Jones, Green has family ties to the FSU program with cousin E.G. Green being a top wide receiver for the 'Noles back in the 90's. The Rivals100 member hasn't given many hints about his recruitment but his close relationship with wide receivers coach Lawrence Dawsey should give FSU the edge. Other advantages for the Seminoles include that his brother recently committed to nearby Florida A&M and his final visit will be to Tallahassee this weekend. A signing day announcement is expected.
Runner up: Georgia

I love the confidence displayed by Warchant and Rivals, however I know the magic that Athens can hold for a football fan and player.  I wouldn't be surprised at all if Richt was able to steal another Florida player right out from under the 'Noles nose.

The second player the two teams are battling for isn't quite as heralded as Christian Green, but is just as much of a physical specimen, and this time it's a recruit from the state of Georgia.  Telvin Smith  is from Lowndes High School in Valdosta, GA.  Lowndes has long been an established pipe line for Florida State recruits with just last year Greg Reid and Gerald Demps coming to the 'Noles from their program.

Smith was playing basketball for Lowndes but recently dropped from the team to concentrate on football, and it's paid off.  Originally measured at 6'3" and 196 lbs, Smith has reportedly bulked up to 215 lbs to be better suited to play his Outside Linebacker position.  By all reports he hasn't lost a bit of speed but packs a lot more punch when he lays the hit.

Smith has been verbally committed to the 'Noles since he attended the Seminoles Showtime Camp in the Summer of 2009 but has continued to take official visits including two recent officials to UGA.  This is what Telvin had to say after those two visits:

"It was a great visit. Mark Richt is a great guy. It was nice to be around him," Smith said. "Coach McClendon came. I like him a lot. I am close to him also. The staff was real nice. We just talked most of the time, not even a whole lot about recruiting but instead just got to know each other."

This past weekend Smith made his way to Athens for his second official visit.

"My Georgia official was great," he said. "I hung out with a lot of the players, and I really liked them. The coaches, I already feel like I have a bond with them. I was hosted by Baccari Rambo during the visit. I was with him most of the time."

Even more recent was the radio interview that Telvin did on Thursday night in which he indicated some uncertainty about who will get his signature on February 3rd.  According to Warchant this is what Telvin had to say:

"I was told that Valdosta (GA) Lowndes four-star linebacker Telvin Smith was on the In The Game Magazine Radio Show tonight in Valdosta and said he was going to FSU on Friday and Athens on Saturday. He is really having a hard time deciding and still doesn't know where he is going."

I think Telvin is going to be a steal for whichever school gets him and will make an immediate impact.  His work ethic is reported to be off the charts and he makes strides to get better at every practice.  A player like that will always be an asset to his team.

Provided by the fact that Telvin has already taken two official visits to UGA and that he will be in Athens last in the recruiting process doesn't bode well for the 'Noles in my opinion.

Captain's Projection:

Christian Green - FSU
Telvin Smith - UGA

In a reverse of last year with Charles and Reid I think the natives will stay in their home states and go with in-state schools.

Be sure to check back over the next few days as I will have a couple more recruiting pieces posted concerning some players that haven't officially committed anywhere yet and what their likely destination is going to be.

Ten Things JJ Thinks He Thinks

Before we get started with the ten things I wanted to give everyone a heads up that we have squares for sale for the Super Bowl. Squares are $5 a piece and the 1st and 3rd quarter winners will receive $50. Halftime winner will receive $150 and if you hit the Final Score you will pocket $250. If you do not know how squares work please visit this site. As always let me know if you have any further questions or interested in purchasing any squares. In 13 days we will have Super Bowl XLIV, I am getting excited. The Colts have opened up at 5.5 point favorites at the Las Vegas Hilton and 4.5 point favorites everywhere else in town.

1. Georgia Thoughts

What a dominating game by the Dawgs Saturday evening in Athens. A lot of things happened Saturday that have not happen in a long time. It was Georgia's first sellout since Feb. 7, 2007 against Florida and its first win over a top 10 team since Feb. 14, 2004 against then-No. 8 Kentucky. Something tells me it will not be another six years before we beat another top 10 team. If you had told me in November that Georgia would have a 25-point lead over anyone in the second half of an SEC game this year, I would have called you something and it would not have been complementary.

Mark Fox has got us playing better basketball each time out and I feel that is a sign of a great coach. In fact we do not look like the same team that lost to St. John’s at Madison Square Garden by double figures. In addition Mark Fox has twice been given seven days to prepare for an opponent and I might argue that these are the two best games Georgia has played this year. After the loss to St. John’s Fox had 10 days to prepare his team for Illinois and the Dawgs responded for a 3 point win. Then this week the Dawgs had seven days off and looked dominant throughout. I think Georgia has a keeper in Mark Fox.

Even the Knoxville paper has noticed Georgia’s sudden rise in hoops and says the Vols should be worried. I love it.

Speaking of Mark’s, you might not want to try to play Coach Richt in a game of horse. Look at this shot he made during Georgia’s walkthrough Saturday morning.

2. Colts Thoughts

Not sure where to begin with the Colts game but I do know Peyton Manning is about two Super Bowl rings away from being the best quarterback of all time. Say what you want about #18 but in AFC Championship Games he has twice led his team back from double digit deficits. In addition, with the 377-yard passing game, Peyton Manning became the league’s all-time leader in 300-yard playoff games, with seven. Kurt Warner and Joe Montana each have six. Furthermore, Mannng had two receivers top 100 yards. They were Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie, not Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark.

The turning point of the game was Manning’s two minute drive right before halftime that lowered a deficit from 11 to 4. This was the second time in two weeks that Manning has been masterful in the last two minutes.
What can one say about Pierre Garcon? His 151 receiving yards were the third most in Colts' postseason history and his 11 receptions were an AFC title game record. How many of these were for first downs or big plays? For two weeks now the story has been about Garcon (do not forget his strip of Ed Reed last week).

On the Jets end of things, how good was Sanchez and just think how good he can be? A majority of the team should be back and they should have Leon Washington and Kris Jenkins back from injury next season. If they get one more big play receiver for Sanchez the AFC East might be put on notice for the future.

3. Saints-Vikings

In two of the last three seasons Brett Favre has cost his team a shot at the Super Bowl with poorly timed interceptions. In the other season he got his head coach fired. Who wants him back next season? Furthermore, the two interceptions that Favre threw allowed him to take over the record for the most INTs by a QB in postseason history with 30. He also set the record for career postseason passing yards and career postseason pass completions.

Now onto the Saints and they sure ain't the Aints anymore. The Saints advanced to their first Super Bowl and became the first home team to win a conference championship game in overtime.  This is also the first time since 1993 that the two No. 1 seeds will face off in the Super Bowl.

You want to know how magical this win was for the Saints? The Vikings ran 27 more plays than the Saints. The Saints only converted 3/12 3rd down conversions while the Vikings converted 7/12. The Saints were penalized 9 times for 88 yards while the Vikings were penalized 5 times for 32 yards. The Vikings rushed for 165 yards while the Saints rushed for 68. In fact the Vikings gained 475 total yards to the Saints 257. However, the Vikings turned the ball over 5 times while the Saints only coughed it up once. That would be the difference. These numbers are still mind boggling to me.

Somehow, someway the Saints are going to the Super Bowl. My two favorite players in the NFL face-off against each other (Drew Brees and Peyton Manning).  Peyton Manning will play his hometown and fathers team for all the marbles. It should be fun.

4. College Hoop Thoughts

a. I would not put to much stock in Texas losing at K-State and UCONN this week. They are still an outstanding team.
b. Can the Big XII get three final four teams with Texas, Kansas and Kansas State all looking like legitimate contenders.
c. Baylor is not bad either.
d. Can the Big East get all four participants in the Final Four with teams such as legitimate shots.
e. Kentucky and Vanderbilt are the only undefeated SEC teams in conference play. I can understand Kentucky but not Vandy. Good for the Dores but they have a tough week ahead of themselves with visits to Tennessee and Kentucky. Why would the SEC schedule maker do that to any school?
f. If the state of Mississippi can have two top 25 college basketball teams why can’t Georgia?
g. I was pretty impressed with Duke’s second half Saturday night. The Devils are probably the best team in an ACC that is probably a little down.
h. I got to give love to the Captain’s and Coach Dan’s Florida State Seminoles for their win over the Yellow Jackets Sunday afternoon. Solomon Alabi hit two go-ahead free throws with 23 seconds left to give Florida State its second win over a ranked team this season and the season sweep over Georgia Tech.
i. This is the sixth win in the Seminoles' last 19 games against a ranked opponent. Georgia Tech has lost five straight against Florida State. Anytime the Yellow Jackets lose it is a great day for America.
j. College Hoops Power 5
1. Kentucky
2. Kansas
3. Villanova
4. Syracuse
5. Texas

5. College Football Thoughts

a. Apparently Urban Meyer’s health has improved a lot.
b. How does his daughter feel? You remember the one who said it was going to be great to get their Dad back.
c. How is UT Athletic Director Mike Hamilton not on more of a hot seat?
d. ESPN.com has a headline that says “Tebow promises to be himself for NFL scouts.” What the hell is that supposed to mean?
e. I would never let my son play for coach Willie Mack Garza. He was Tennessee secondary coach last year and sometime last week packed up his office and left town and apparently didn't notify anybody on the current staff that he was leaving. Nice real nice.
f. If he winds up on the USC staff I will lose some respect for that great institution.
g. Ron Higgins has this great stat concerning Lane Kiffin leaving after one year. No other SEC head coach has left after one year of his own accord for another job since the 1940s.
h. Great read by Andy Staples that calls College football coach as the toughest job in college sports.
i. Am I the only one dying for spring practice?Villanova, Syracuse, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Georgetown and Syracuse all having

6. Baseball Thoughts

a. Love this quote from Buster Olney: The Mets acquired Gary Matthews Jr., an outfielder who can't hit for average, can't hit for power and can't play defense. Why?
b.  Olney also passes this year-by-year UZR/150 ratings from FanGraphs. Let's just say there's a trend in the numbers:
  • 2002: 23.8 (1st among 107 outfielders with at least 500-plus innings)
  • 2003: 6.6 (33rd of 105)
  • 2004: 21.3 (9th of 107)
  • 2005: 18.7 (15th of 112)
  • 2006: 1.0 (46th of 108)
  • 2007: -12.2 (88th of 108)
  • 2008: -13.7 (94th of 112)
  • 2009: -24.6 (109th of 115)
c. By the way Olney's blog on ESPN.com is a daily must read. Olney is my third favorite Vanderbilt alum. Tied for #1 is The Admiral and Coach Walters. Who you with?
d. Highest missed swing pct. in NL last season
Ryan Howard 38.9
Mark Reynolds 33.6
Brad Hawpe 29.6
Rick Ankiel 29.3
Ian Stewart 29.3
e. Ryan Howard swung and missed almost 40% of the time last season. He still had an average of .279 last season. Wow.
f. Could Garrett Anderson be up for a reunion in Anaheim now that Sarge Jr. is a Met.
g. How far has Erik Bedard fallen? Three years ago he was one of the top names in baseball. How does that Adam Jones trade look now for the Orioles?
h. Still a decent amount of free agent pitchers on the market. The list includes Bedard, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez, Ben Sheets, and Livan Hernandez.
i. I would have loved that rotation 5 years ago.
j. Some decent position players available include Hank Blalock, Russell Branyon, Carlos Delgado, Orlando Hudosn, Felipe Lopez, Orlando Cabrera, Jim Thome, Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye, Xavier Nady and Gary Sheffield.
k. High Chase % in the NL last season
            Bengie Molina 43.9
            Pablo Sandoval 41.5
            Alfonso Soriano 37.0
            Jeff Francoeur 36.0
            Rick Ankiel 34.4
l. So glad none of these guys play for the Braves
m. Next week we will have reaction to my non-steroid team. I had one written for this week but it did not save and I did not feel like writing it again and decided to go with College Football Thoughts instead.

7. What I Read This Week
The first read of the week comes from Hall of Fame Baseball writer Hal McCoy who has covered the Reds the last 37 season for the Dayton Daily News. Unfortunately this great scribe will not be covering the Reds anymore as the Dayton paper has cut out daily Reds coverage. He still posts great reads frequently through his blog on the Dayton Daily News paper website and this week he wrote about spring trainings from yesteryear. Today's ballparks maybe more fan friendly but they are not as fun.

The second read of the week comes from the Washington Post and takes a look at the relationship between former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and radioman Paul Harvey. Previously confidential files show that Harvey, who died last February at 90, enjoyed a 20-year friendship with Hoover, often submitting advance copies of his radio script for comment and approval. Harvey wrote Hoover and his deputies regularly. Hoover, in turn, helped Harvey with research, suggested changes in scripts and showered the broadcaster with effusive praise. We now know the rest of the story. (To easy I know.)

8. 2010 College Top 10

The Coach's first look at 2010. This will probably change when the Coach's official poll comes out in August but we will use this as a start.
1. Alabama - All of Alabama's firepower is coming back on offense, including Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and receiver Julio Jones. The schedule gets a little more difficult, with home games against Penn State on Sept. 11 and Florida on Oct. 2.By the way they can still play defense.
2. Boise St.-The Broncos will bring back 21 of 22 starters on offense and defense, losing only star cornerback Kyle Wilson. Quarterback Kellen Moore will be a Heisman Trophy candidate. Two big games next year with one at home against Oregon State on Sept. 25 and against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., on Oct. 2.
3. Ohio State - Only two starters leave the offense and Terrelle Pryor maybe turning into the player we thought he would be. You know they will play defense. The Buckeyes play Miami at home on Sept. 11, but play road games at Wisconsin and Iowa.
4. Virginia Tech - Tailback Ryan Williams was one of the country's best freshmen in 2009, and sophomore Darren Evans should be back from torn knee ligaments that caused him to miss all of last season. Brutal nonconfrence schedule with games against Central Michigan, East Carolina and Boise St at FedEx Field. I might have overrated the Hokies.
5. Texas - They may lose a Colt and four other starters on offense but is their a program that recruits better? We all saw how good Garrett Gilbert can be with his second half performance in the National Championship game.
6. Iowa - What happens if Ricky Stanzi doesn't get hurt against Northwestern? Stanzi returns for an easier schedule as the Hawkeyes play Ohio State and Penn State at home this season.
7. Florida - I know they lost Tebow and almost entire defense but their still is plenty of talent running around Gainesville. Enough talent that Urban Meyer shouldn't kill himself.
8. Oregon - Oregon returns 10 offensive starters from a group that scored 36 points per game in 2009. They also return 9 starters on defense. I might should have put them higher.
9. Nebraska - The Black Shirt Defense is back. Also 10 starters return on offense so that side of the ball has  be better. Who else in Big XII north can play with them. Also Texas at home does not hurt.
10. Georgia Tech - Can anyone in the ACC figure out the triple option? Defense has to be better under Al Groh.
Just Missed: Oklahoma, TCU, Miami, Penn St, Wisconsin, USC

9. NFL Power 5
1. Indianapolis Colts – Have been my top team for most of the season. Hopefully they will still be here in 14 days.
2. New Orleans Saints – South Beach is going to turn into Bourbon Street south the ext two weeks.
3. Minnesota Vikings – Can they find a QB they trust for the future?
4. New York Jets – How good is this team going to be in the next few years?
5. San Diego Chargers – Is LT the worst playoff performer of all time?

10. Non Football or Baseball Thoughts
a .I watched the movie Shawshank Redemption for the first time this weekend. I won't say it is the best movie I have even scene but I can not think of a better one at this moment.
b. Tons of memorable quotes and lines but these are probably my favorite five in no particular order:
      1. Andy Dufresne: Bad luck, I guess. It floats around. It's got to land on somebody. It was my turn, that's all. I was in the path of the tornado. I just didn't expect the storm would last as long as it has.
      2. Warden Samuel Norton: I believe in two things: discipline and the Bible. Here you'll receive both. Put your trust in the Lord; your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.
      3. Red: [narrating] Forty years I been asking permission to piss. I can't squeeze a drop without say-so.
      4. Fat Ass: I don't belong here! I want to go home! I want my mother!
Another Prisoner: I had your mother, she wasn't that great!
      5. Andy Dufresne: Get busy living, or get busy dying.
c. It is embarrassing that I have not seen that movie before this weekend. If you haven't seen it, do not tell anyone, just go rent it.
d. Heard some great radio on the way back from Athens on Saturday Night. It had been years since I had last heard some Roll On by Alabama. Great tune.
e. I played some tennis this weekend for the first time since the 90’s. I have a decent forehand but my backhand and serve were pathetic. In all reality my serve was beyond pathetic.
f. I am still quite athletic and was able to run down some shots and hit some winners.
g. We haven’t had a new office in four weeks so when they returned we get a glorified clip show. Can you say lazy?
h. With it being a clip show, I only remember one Kevin clip and that was him spilling a whole thing of chili. Why doesn’t one of the funnier cast members receive more love?
i. Modern Family was its usually awesome self. Plus there was this above average scene of Julie Bowen entering her daughter’s room.
j. “How I Met Your Mother” has given us lingo to introduce into every day life like The Cheerleader Effect, the Lemon Law, The Crazy/Hot Scale, The Bro Code and this past week we learned about the reacher and the settler. It is my goal in life to be a reacher and every red blooded male should have this same goal.
k. In the past 15 years I have not watched much Conan. However, I watched a lot this week and he is a clown but still quite funny. I do not think I could watch nightly like I do with Letterman. I do understand why he has leagues of viewers.
l. In the second ever Ten Things I wrote this; Very interested to see how Jay at 10:00 plays against the CSI’s and the CBS 10:00 lineup. I think we now have our answer.
m. I am a couple of weeks behind in Leverage and Friday Night Lights. Hopefully I can find time to catch up this week.
n. Just as a reminder I will have some squares for sell this week. They will be $5 a piece. The payouts will be $50 for first and third quarters. $150 for halftime and $250 for FINAL SCORE. Let me know if you are interested and I will stop by your desk or fax you a copy of the board to fill out.
o. I saw the movie Youth in Revolt Monday afternoon. Not bad but not great.
p. After Youth In Revolt I snuck into Up In The Air. Pretty good movie that makes me think a lot about my life and I usually enjoy those type of flicks. It has to be mentioned how George Clooney is such a Sky Miles whore in the movie. I respect a good Sky Miles whore.
q. Does anyone have any ideas for content next week? Their will be no football (I am not counting the Pro Bowl) and I will be struggling for ideas to right about. Your help will be much appreciated.
r. For the past three weekends I have made trips to Athens, Ga. I would make it four in a row but there is not much going on this weekend. What a great town.
s. How have I not linked this before now? Looking like a fool with the pants on the ground.
t. Just as a heads up Eric Church will be performing at Wild Bill’s on Saturday night February 20th. Who all is interested in going? I know I am.
u. I also heard this Luke Bryan song on the way back from Athens. I know it is a remake but still pretty good if you ask me.
v. Does anyone have any great Super Bowl parties planned? It has to be a great party as I will be a bucket of nerves come Super Bowl Sunday. Also last year I went to a decent party but their was a lot of chit chat that took the focus off the game. I can not have that in 13 days.

Quote of the week
Comes from Phil Dunphy on Modern Family. This show is so funny.

Cheerleading in my college was cool. The football players were so jealous they wouldn't even let me and my buddies, Trevor, Scotty and Ling go to their parties.

Text of the week
From my buddy Todd after UGA dominated the Vols on Saturday. Just as a note I was rocking a red sweatervest.

I feel like the sexiness of the sweatervest helped get the W.

I also feel it played a role. However we can not discount the sexiness of the visor or great product. In retrospect the Vols didn't stand a chance on Saturday.

A Colts Fan Looks At The AFC Championship

My good friend and future lawyer Dan on Friday looked at this weeks AFC Championship game from a Jets perspective and I know give my version from a Colts perspective. I am extremely nervous about the game on Sunday for one they already beat us once this season. Furthermore, their is nothing more scarier than an above average team catching lightning in the bottle come the postseason. See the 05 Steelers and 07 Giants as recent examples.

Here are 5 things to look at on Sunday.

1) Turnovers and Special Teams/Defensive Scores- In week 16 the Colts turned the ball over twice one was a sack/fumble returned for a touchdown and a Curtis Painter interception that put the Jets in position for their first offensive touchdown. In addition Brad Smith returned a kickoff 106 yards. None of these things can happen if the Colts want to head to the Super Bowl.
2) Get ahead early- Here are Sanchez's completion totals in his past seven victories: nine, 13, seven, 12, eight, 12 and 12. I would love for the game to be on Sanchez's shoulders down 2 scores in the 4th quarter.
3) The underrated Colts D- Not only did the Colts not allow a touchdown to the Ravens in 8 quarters this season, halfway through the 3rd quarter against the Jets all the Colts D had allowed was a field goal. Almost impossible to beat Manning by kicking field goals.
4) Manning versus Jets D - When teams have sent 5 or more rushers at Manning this season he has completed 68.7% of his passes at an average of 9 yards. His td to int ratio was 7-4 and a QB rating of 101.4. When the Jets sent 5 or more rushers their opponents completed 47.9% of their passes at an average of 4.7 yards. The td-int ratio was 2-7 and opposing QB's had a rating of 56.1 which was the best in the NFL.
5) Bad postseason karma for the Colts when they play the Jets - Not only did the Joe Willie Namath guarantee victory in Super Bowl III he actually backed those words up as the Jets shocked the world beating the heavily favored Colts. The only other time the Jets and Colts have met in the postseason was 2003 and it was a pretty strong defensive effort by New York against Manning. Jets 41, Colts 0. Three Jets and 10 Colts remain on the rosters from then.

It will be fun to watch.

A Jets Fan Looks At The AFC Championship

Thanks to NJ.com for the pic.

With the AFC Championship game this Sunday I asked my good friend and future lawyer Dan who also happens to be a Jets Season Ticket Holder to look at the AFC Championship from the Jets point of view. Sometime in the next 24 hours I will preview the game from a Colts point of view. here is Dan's take.....

We were done.  Rex Ryan said it.  The Tony Gonzalez TD all-but-sealed our 2009 fate.
And then something happened.
Shockingly, the pieces started to all fall in place and the other games went our way.  Then Jim Caldwell helped our cause.  (Thanks, Jim!)
While the Jets probably would have lost to the Colts in week 16 and consequently their season would have come to a disappointing end, they were hanging around the Colts and were within one score of Peyton and Indy when Caldwell pulled Manning and Co. in the 3rd Quarter.
The Jets won that game and won the next three games, and here we are again in Indianapolis.

I did not feel good entering last week, but the Jets hung around and the game was played at their preferred low-scoring pace.  The halftime 7-0 Chargers lead was a welcome sight for Jets fans.  I pray that the same thing happens this week.  Once again, I do not feel confident entering this game, but this team has something special and the last four weeks have boggled expectations.

Here are five keys to the game from a Jets fan's point-of-view:
1) Don't get behind early - The Jets are a running team.  If they get behind and have to chase down the Colts, Sanchez will likely not be able to claw his way back by out-throwing mano-a-mano vs. Manning.
2) Contain Clark - At this point, Revis WILL shut down Wayne.  The rest of the Jets secondary should be able to relatively limit Austin Collie, but Dallas Clark is the X factor (see Antonio Gates last week in the 1st half).
3) Somehow confuse Manning - If anyone can, Rex can.  As I have said all year, the best part about getting Ryan as coach is that you are getting him as the Defensive Coordinator as well.
4) Smart Mark - No turnovers and low-risk passes have worked for him for the past two months, and if this trend changes, the Colts will win.
5) Block Freeney - Twice in the first game Freeney was allowed to get to Sanchez without being blocked at all.  Jets Offensive Line coach Bill Callahan will surely try to stop these dangerous blocking mix-ups, but in a game where turnovers will likely doom the Jets if they are to lose, a strip-sack could turn the tide the wrong way.

Go Jets and hopefully I will write a game review after Sunday's AFC Championship.  But only if I am in a good mood.

Personally I hope you are in a horrible mood.

What Did We Learn This Week?

As always we will begin with some Arcade Fire for inspiration.OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Let's all welcome Evan back to the group this week...welcome back Evan. Also, this is Coach Eanes last chance for participation, no participation this week he is out forever. Now onto what I learned...

I learned I love 3 day weekends and when I win the lottery tonight my future business Johnson and Co. will be the least productive company since Krueger on Seinfeld. The work week will end after a big-time lunch on Friday and not begin until Monday after lunch. I also learned I need a lot of work if I am going to be a successful salesman or at least a lot more training. After reading this article in the NY Post I learned Rex Ryan consumes about 7000 calories a day. He also loves a version of Mexican food he calls Rexican...if he wasn't coaching the team playing the colts this weekend I would probably be his biggest (no pun intended) fan. I also learned that I have more self discipline than I realize as in the past week I have made a trip to Athens and sat in a suite with free alcohol without drinking. I also learned that my next major investment will be a wii. Is it possible the wii is more addicting than cocaine? I also think some wii golf tournaments with cash being wagered is a great way to spend an evening.

What did everyone else learn this week?

What did the Mr. Mitchell learn?

I would like to welcome myself back after a week off for renewals.  I learned no matter how hard I work, renewing a season ticket is more luck than anything considering I am 10% behind right now.  Unbelievable.  Welcome back Evan...Things have a way of working out, even if you are in Mississippi.  I have learned that since an ipod was purchased for me on my birthday, I can catch every second of the Dan Patrick show, commercial free, which has me hooked for life.  God Bless you people at Apple and making podcasts free.  I learned Peyton is the best and I love the Colts more and more as my Rams flounder between 1 and 3 wins every year.  Good luck to #18 this weekend.

What did Coach Eanes learn this week?

I learned that not sharing what we learned could lead to ones dismissal from an email chain.  I will start off by stating the past few weeks I have had a tremendous case of writers block. For that and my lack of participation, I apologize. With that....I learned that I love my new place. I have spent about $30 in gas in the past 2 months due to the lack of commute I now have. I learned that the big guy and I have the same dream to one day own a Wii as ridiculous as they are it sure makes for a great night of beers and stupidity. I learned that with some preset protocol I too can "sell like hell"....How's that sound?

What did the Roomdog learn this week?
Congrats to Evan and welcome back to the school of learning things every week.  I learned I'm really scared for Favre vs. Saints and pray that the Saints win b/c it would kill me to see Favre lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl and a Saints win would put me at ease from the devastating loss the Packers had to the Cardinals 2 weeks ago.  I learned IU basketball could have had a decent year if our best player didn't get hurt the game before the Big Ten season started.... They are 3-3 and blew a 15 point second half lead to Illinois.... And was within about 5 points of Michigan with 5 minutes left.... IU being 5-1 would have been one of the top 2 or 3 stories of college basketball.  3-3 is still solid and I'm happy with the progress.  I learned that next week I will be attending Hawks/Celtics and WWE Royal Rumble and it might be a top 5 weekend for 2010 for me.  I learned just a couple seconds ago that today was payday for my part time job and it is much needed.

What did Evan learn this week?
I learned that Mississippi's roads are all horrible, but maybe life in the state's largest city (pop. 170,000) won't be too bad. I learned that their SEC Network coverage here sucks. The two largest universities in this state represent the SEC, and the states largest city doesn't have a separate channel for its affiliate, ala Atlanta using P'tree TV. I learned that my dream season is still a possibility, if our PG's, who some call the best backcourt in the America, can limit our turnovers. If we are able to take care of business against the Hogs Saturday, what a great story this season can become.....NIT to No. 1! I learned that I like going in to work at 9 much better than 8:30. I also learned that I LOVE not having to deal with traffic on the commute to and from work. I learned that one of the bigger night spots in Jackson is called the "Electric Cowboy" (insert homo joke here). Not sure if I'll be visiting that location. I also learned that while having your own apartment is peaceful, moving everything up the 3rd floor--MISERABLE. I learned I like the Central Time Zone so much better than Eastern. I can watch all my shows, and still get good nights sleep. I learned that I need to learn a couple of good restaurants in the area for lunch. I also learned that having wrecks will really screw you over when it comes to getting your own car insurance policy.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. In case you're wondering, that's everyone except Eanes. That guy really has it out for me, I swear!

What did the Admiral learn?
I learned that playoff football is amazing to watch and I'm sad there are only three games left on the season. I learned that Vince Young will be playing in the Pro Bowl. It just had to take about 5 QBs to drop out. I learned that David Rubinstein does not like Shane's Rib Shack or free suite food. I learned that Vandy basketball has some big games coming up and I can't wait to see how they hang with the big boys. I learned that I hate waking up before the sun comes up and I hope to not see 6:30 for a long time.

What did you learn in internet land?

Ten Things JJ Thinks He Thinks

I apologize for the delay in getting this posted. This weekend I went to Athens for UGA Baseball dinner Saturday night. On Sunday I went to watch football in Augusta with Brice and did not return to the ATL to around 1015 Sunday night and I had to watch 24 before doing anything else.

1. Georgia Thoughts

A few things happened at UGA this past week. The Dawgs have got their Defensive Coordinator and he is a guy to get excited about. In fact this quote from the teleconference has me fired up, "I look forward to developing an aggressive, physical, attacking style defense that offenses will not look forward to playing against." Todd Grantham has coached under some of the best defensive minds in football including Nick Saban and Wade Phillips. (Say what you want about Phillips the guy can scheme on Defense). In fact Nck Saban tried to hire him as the Defensive Coordinator when Saban took over the Dolphins. In addition this guy was a coordinator when the Cleveland Browns went 10-6. That is impressive coaching. Remember all the finger wagging we’ve been doing in Mark Richt’s face about how the DC hire may be the most important decision of his career?  And this does include me.Well, guess what, people?  Mark Richt thinks so, too. Combine that with a personality that’s by nature thoughtful and deliberate and in retrospect it’s not hard to see that this pick was never going to be a rush job.  Richt had his time frame in mind from the get go (i.e., this weekend) and a process that he wanted to follow.  Unless something dropped into his lap unexpectedly, that pace was never likely to be changed. I think we can all agree that Grantham is better than Willie and we now have one of the more anticipated Spring practices ever at UGA.

The basketball team continues to show signs of progress but continues to have their heart ripped out in some very tough losses. The Hoop Dawgs have no mid week game this week and Tennessee comes to Athens next Saturday afternoon at 5:00. The Stegasorous needs to be SOLD OUT. This team has performed beyond everyones expectations and they deserve to play in front of a packed gym that is actually cheering for UGA. In my opinion their is no sport where they home crowd can influence the outcome of a game more than basketball. In addition Mark Richt and company will have some top recruits in town for the weekend. It is time for UGA fans to fill their passion bucket and support their team. I am driving over on Saturday...who is meeting me in Athens? Who is coming with? I will go by myself as I have seen me do it.

2. Colts Thoughts

Impressive win by the Colts Saturday night in Indy. The Colts have played the Ravens twice this season and have held them to a total of 6 field goals. It is impossible to beat Mr. Manning by kicking field goals. What makes the stat of the Colts D even more impressive is this is not the Trent Dilfer led Ravens offense, this is a really good offense led by Joe Flacco and Ray Rice. Also, the three points allowed is the fewest by the Colts in the postseason since the 1971 Divisional playoffs vs. the Browns (three). Even more impressive about the Colts D is over the last three seasons the Ravens have had 31 possessions against the Colts. In those 31 possessions the Ravens scored a total of 21 points all on field goals while turning the ball over 11 times. Who says the Colts can not play Defense?

The Jets come back to Motor City USA and it was the Colts-Jets game in week 16 that began this run for the Jets. Everyone remembers the Colts benching Manning and the rest of the starters in the 3rd quarter and a 15-6 lead turned into a 29-15 loss real quick. The Colts can't afford to let the Jets hang around on Sunday if they want to return to Miami and the Super Bowl. Look what happened in Cincinnati and San Diego. Both teams had possessions to expand their lead and maybe put the game away before the Jets started to get their offensive legs. Stomp on them early, and perhaps you can attain a more desirable result. Let them stay in the game, and you're asking for trouble.

3. Coaching Jobs

With Lane Kiffin leaving Tennessee to take the head coaching job at USC this week many of the experts were saying that USC was one of the best jobs in College Football. This got me thinking what are the best jobs in college football, basketball and as an Athletic Director. I try to take everything in to play and this includes weather. Thus the reason Michigan or Ohio State does not crack my top 5. I write this list as I am the hot name in college coaching or administration and can name any place I want to work and this is how I would rank them.

Top 5 Jobs in College Football
1. Texas-The year before Mack Brown took over the Horns were 4-7. How do you go 4-7 in that State as the flagship institution? This locker room is not to bad either.
2. Florida State-Close enough to South Georgia to raid the top players from GA, still located in probably the best state for high school football talent. Is their a better scene than Chief Osceola and Renegade? Why haven't I been to a game at the Doak?
3. USC-The best fight song in college football, song girls, Student Body Right, the LA weather and a state that is probably just as good as Florida in producing athletes.
4. LSU - More high school talent in Louisiana is the reason they are ranked a spot better than Bama. The Golden Band from Tiger Land.  The LSU Golden Girls give the Song Girls a run for their money just as an fyi.
5. Alabama- The premiere football program in the SEC. If it was possible to build a 150,000 seat stadium, they could sell it out every Saturday. Not to many can actually say that. The Million Dollar Band and the Third Best Fight Song in College Football.

Top 5 Jobs in College Basketball
1. UCLA-By far the best tradition in college basketball. Has everything one needs to be successful.
2. North Carolina - Tied with Kentucky as the second best tradition in college basketball. The Dean Dome. How about these names that hang in the rafters.
3. Kentucky - Tied with UNC as second best tradition in college hoops. Rupp Arena is a palace. Being able to bet the ponies every Spring is not a bad thing either.
4.UCONN- Close enough to NYC to get some of the great players out of New York City, but far enough away so the kids feel they were able to get out. Every year they play multiple games at Madison Square Garden and it seems like every game is on one of the ESPN channels. (Any coincidence ESPN is also headquartered in Connecticut?)
5. Kansas - Rock Chalk Jayhawk

Athletic Director
1. Texas
2. Florida State
3. Florida
4. Ohio State
5. USC

Before you email me saying I forgot to include the Florida Gators as a top football job listen to my reasoning. Who were they before 1990? Also Steve Spurrier taught Gator fans how to win so they now expect blowouts and 50 points on the scoreboard every Saturday and that is not possible. Bear Bryant taught Alabama to win and the Crimson Tide have no problems winning a 17-13 heavyweight fight. I feel they uneccessary expectations of Gator fans keeps this job out of my top 5. Look at Urban Meyer, the stress of a one loss season had him ready to retire. Also, midway through the 2008 season (the year they won the National Championship) I was driving through Gainesville and the tone of the fans on the radio were this was a 7-5 team, not a national championship team.

Thoughts?

4. Baseball's Non-Steroid Team

Earlier last week I was asked by reader Ben Ross to put together a team of players I did not think were involved with steroids. I will give a time period of 1993-2003 to choose my team. 93 was the first year McGwire said he used steroids. We started having testing in 2004. Hopefully we do not end up with a team full of David Ecksteins.

C Craig Biggio (Before you email me and call me an idiot please realize he came up as a catcher and played 328 games behind the plate) If not Biggio, Sandy Alomar Jr. is our catcher.
1B Fred McGriff (Why isn't this guy getting more Hall of Fame mention? The 493 homeruns and 2490 hits have to count for something.)
2B Jeff Kent
3B Cal Ripken Jr. (Moved to third to create room for The Captain)
SS Barry Larkin and Derek Jeter
LF Larry Walker
CF Ken Griffey Jr.
RF Tony Gwynn
DH Paul Molitar
SP Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina and David Cone
RP Mariano Rivera,Trevor Hoffman

Email away and let me know your thoughts. If you have a better team put one together.

5. Baseball Thoughts

a. Growing up I always thought that Greg Maddux was the best regular season pitcher of all time but not as reliable come the post-season. Then I found these stats, and my thinking may have been way off. Maddux made 740 regular-season starts, compared to 30 in the postseason and the mediocre 11-14 postseason record says more about his teams than it says about him.
b. In the postseason, Maddux had a 3.27 ERA and 1.242 WHIP in 35 postseason games (30 starts). No, it’s not the 3.16 ERA and sublime 1.143 WHIP he posted for his reg-season career, but still probably good enough to have given him an 18-9 postseason record if his teams had played as well as, say, Andy Pettitte’s teams have played for him.
c. Speaking of Petitte,  he is 18-9 in 40 postseason starts — winningest pitcher in postseason history — with a 3.90 ERA and 1.333 WHIP. Again, Maddux had a 3.27 ERA and 1.242 WHIP in 35 postseason games (30 starts).
d. In Maddux’s last 20 posteason games (15 starts), he went 3-9 with a 3.26 ERA, an ERA identical to his 3.26 support runs per nine innings he’s pitched in that span. (His teams scored two or fewer runs while he was in 11 of those 15 starts, including one or no runs while he was in seven of the 15.)
e. In Pettitte’s last 19 postseason games (all starts), he’s gone 9-4 with a 3.83 ERA, while his teams have provided 5.48 support runs per nine innings he’s pitched in that span. (His teams scored at least four runs while he was in eight of his last 15 postseason starts, including six runs or more while he was in five of those 15 games.)
f. How many more World Series would the Yankees have won if Maddux signs with them after the 92 season instead of Atlanta? Does Buck Showalter get fired after 1995? Does Joe Torre ever get hired in the Bronx?
g. The other big news this week was Mark McGwire telling us something we were pretty sure we knew already. A lot has been made about his comment that he didn't think the steroids help him hit 70 home runs. This comment brings me to this point, people say they want steroid users to be honest, but that's not really true at all. They want McGwire to say that he agrees with them, even if he doesn't mean it. They would prefer that he lie to validate their own viewpoint, rather than say what he truly believes. It's not about an accounting for crimes against baseball. It's about creating consensus, so we can end the argument.
h. Thus I tend to believe that McGwire is telling the truth when he thinks that if he were healthy every year he played he would have not need to take the steroids and he would have still hit 70 homeruns. Personally I think this is crazy but I have hung around baseball players enough to know how confident (most call cocky) they are in their own ability that McGwire actually would think this.
i. I hope I did a good job explaining my point. One more time, while I do not agree with his statement I still think he is being truthful when he says in his opinion the steroids did not help him hit home runs.
j. Great job by 790 The Zone here in Atlanta getting former Senator Tom Davis the day after the McGwire news. Davis broke some news of his own when he said that McGwire was ready to tell the truth in congres 5 years ago but the Attorney General would not grant immunity for his testimony so McGwire gave us the "I am not here to talk about the past answer." Fascinating listen.(Scroll down to Tom Davis)
k. How about the Reds signing of Aroldis Chapman last Sunday. He was signed to a six-year, $30.25MM deal. While it's a lot of money for someone who's never thrown a pitch in the Majors and still needs development, I like the gamble for Cincinnati. As many of my baseball buddies have pointed out, the future of the Reds' rotation is impressive to say the least.
l. Can someone explain why Adam LaRoche declined a two-year, $17MM deal from San Francisco, to sign a one year $6 million deal with Arizona.
m. I would still rather have Glaus for $2 million plus hopefully another $2 million in incentives.
n. What do Joel Piñeiro and Lefty Grove have in common? They each gave up 162 homers. Of course, it has taken ‘the Piñata’ 285 games and it took Grove 616 games.
o. Over the last three seasons, .835 was the OPS of Brian McCann, Matt Kemp, and Mike Lowell.

p. I did not realize Lowell has been that good.
q. It is 31 days to February 18th and Pitchers and Catchers reporting!

6. What I Read This Week

This week I have one article and two book excerpts for everyone's consumption. The article comes from a 2007 LA Magazine profile on Pete Carroll. I read this two years ago and since that time I have been fascinated with Carroll. Did you all know that Carroll would go into the worst neighborhoods of LA and start talking to people. Fascinating person.

Note: CBS last September did a feature on the Coach, quite fascinating. Click here to watch.

The next two reads will be book excerpts. The first excerpt is from The Blind Side, which was Michael Lewis's 2006 book on the left tackle position and in particular Michael Oher. If you have yet to see the movie atlast read the excerpt if you will not read the book.

The second excerpt comes from the book I referenced last week called 'Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime.' This particular excerpt takes a look at John and Elizabeth Edwards. Thanks to lawyer Dan for the heads up.

7. Football Thoughts

a. The Dallas and San Diego losses show us how valuable a dependable field goal kicker is to your team in the postseason
b. Nate Kaeding missed three FGA for the Chargers and was the first kicker to go 0-3 in an NFL playoff game since 1995. He only missed three in the regular season and is 3-9 at home in the postseason in his career.
c. Shaun Suisham was 1-3 and his two misses were easily makeable and came at a time when Dallas as still in the ballgame.
d. I should be mentioned that both Suisham and Mike Vanderjagt are both Canadian. What is the deal with Canadian kickers chocking during the divisional weekend of the NFL playoffs?
e. Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and former Colts assistant Leslie Frazier needs to start getting more credit for is his dominant Viking defense. After gaining 118 yards in the first quarter, the Cowboys got only 130 the rest of the way.
f. In addition, Minnesota sacked Tony Romo six times and forced three turnovers. Romo threw one interception and fumbled the ball three times, losing two of them.
g. How good was the Minnesta D when it mattered most? Romo had an average QB rating of 85.1 percent on first and second downs. On third and fourth downs Romo's QB rating was a pathetic 20.8.
h. Brett Favre threw four TD passes for the first time in a playoff game -- including three to Sidney Rice. Rice is the first player in Vikings' franchise history with three TD receptions in a playoff game.
i. How has Favre not thrown 4 TD's in a playoff game before?
j. Back to the Jets-Chargers game....Opponents are 0-5 against the Jets on FGA this postseason after going 19-23 in the regular season. This is amazing.
k. The Jets won two playoff games in a season for the first time since 1982 and the second time in team history.
l. New York was the second 9-7 team since 1997 to beat a team in a divisional playoff game that was 12-4 or better. A 9-7 Arizona team beat a 12- Carolina team last season.
m. Who knew it was 15 yards to kick a challenge flag?
n. Kurt Warner did not have the same success against the attacking Saints as they had the week before against the Packers. New Orleans sent at least five pass rushers on 12 of Warner's 27 pass plays (44.4 percent) compared to just 21 percent by the Packers.
o. When the Packers brought 5 or more Warner had an unbelievable QB rating of 147.3. Against the Saints Saturday night Warner was a pathetic 32.8.
p. Kurt Warner fell to 3-1 in the Divisional round and 0-3 in postseason games in the Superdome. Safe to say the Superdome is Warner's personal House of Horror.
q. Arizona allowed 90 points in its two playoff games this season. In the Super Bowl era, teams are just 1-6 in their next game after putting up at least 50 points in a postseason game.
r. Drew Brees threw three passing TDs, to join Aaron Brooks as the only QBs in Saints history with at least three passing TDs in a postseason game.
s. Reggie Bush had 217 all-purpose yards and joined Charlie Trippi (1947 NFL Championship) as the only players in postseason history with rushing and punt return TDs in the same game.
t. For those who do not know their football history Charlie Trippi is one of UGA's most decorated football players. Trippi was a two tme All-American and was even named MVP of the 1943 Rose Bowl when UGA beat UCLA 9-0. Trippi is also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame and Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. He was ranked #20 on ESPN's Top 25 Players In College Football History list.
u. I just heard the quotes from Keith Brooking. He is such a punk. Way overrated as a player if you ask me. The only thing worse than losing 34-3 is complaining about it. Also didn't your Cowbys just beat the Eagles 44-14? Also Keith Brooking didnt you take some unnecessary shots at the Falcons earlier this season. One more question for you Keith Brooking do not get faked by play action on 3rd and Ten last year in the playoffs and maybe the Falcons go to the Super Bowl. YOU ARE A HACK KEITH BROOKING.

8. Tennessee Football Thoughts

a. Despite everything you may read and hear this is still one of the best programs in college football. Maybe not a top 5 job, but I do not consider my Alma Mater a top 5 job either.
b. In the long run Tenn might be in a better position with Derek Dooley than Lane Kiffin.
c. If you think that comment is crazy look at this quote from Andy Staples, So forget the fact that Dooley went 17-20 at Louisiana Tech. The degree of difficulty there is much higher than at Tennessee; Dooley's 8-5 season with an Independence Bowl win in 2008 is the equivalent of Tennessee winning an SEC title. Or, if this makes you feel better, remember that Kiffin had a 5-15 career record as a head coach when Tennessee hired him.
d. Is Mike Hamilton the worst AD in America? Not only did he hire Lane Kiffin, he had to publicly defend him multiple times and he could never real Lane in, in my opinion.
e. Their is also this note. Every single Tennessee assistant has guaranteed money coming in 2010; even without Orgeron and Monte Kiffin, the money due Tennessee assistants in 2010 comes to around 1.6 million dollars.

f. They also have to pay Phil Fulmer not to coach.
g. ESPN's Mark Schlabach has a great read on Dooley. This should eliminate any questions about Dooley's qualifications.
h. How bad of a spot is Vince Dooley in this October when the Vols come to Athens? He needs to remember that the Suite he will be seating in is a UGA suite.
i. If you haven't seen it yet, the situation before Lane Kiffin's final Tennessee press conference was a disaster. Ah, news media. Just a delightful group. This is a must watch for everyone. Also, you will see why Lane Kiffin only gave a 30 second press conference. He was prepared to answer questions as long as none of the TV stations were live. One TV had to go live and and thus we only received 30 seconds of Kiffin.

9. NFL Power 5

1. New Orleans Saints - The most dominant team of the weekend. Reggie Bush looked like he was back at USC. Fight On Mr. Bush.
2. Indianapolis Colts - Can they do what they did not do in December?
3. Minnesota Vikings - Can Mr. Allan be as dominant in an opponents dome?
4. New York Jets- For the past three weeks the Jets have forced teams to play their style of football. Can Manning make Sanchez go up and down the field
5. San Diego Chargers - Of the teams not playing anymore, this team is the best.

10. Non Football or Baseball Thoughts

a. Is their anyone who brings more excitement to a broadcast than Gus Johnson?
b. I went to Academy Sports and Outdoor for the first time on Sunday in Augusta and my reaction is WOW. Thank goodness the nearest one is in Athens or I would have way less money than what I have now. I also have another reason to go to Athens which is always a plus.
c. In the words of my man Boots, "that place is legit."
d. I absolutely love the Coors commercial with Hank Straham saying pump it in their baby (talking about the Chiefs scoring a touchdown for those with minds in the gutter). Great shots of Lambardi, Bill Walsh and other classic figures from the past 40 or so years in professional football.
e. I am going to Athens next Saturday for the basketball game. More than likely a day trip. The question becomes where do we eat  lunch? Add Drug, Inoko Express, Mama's Boy? Where do we eat dinner? Inoko Express? Farm 255? The Last Resort?
f. Speaking of Mama's Boy I have eaten their the last two Sundays in a row and that place is becoming a favorite.
g. Who is coming with me to Athens?
h. I got home to watch the first two hours of 24 last night. We are off to a great start. I love the fact we are in New York City this season. In addition how cool is the tunnel everyone uses to access CTU?
i. How I Met Your Mother was very funny last Monday. It gave everyone some twists and turns. Hopefully this show gets back on track and we have no more episodes like the smoking episode.
j. If you are not watching The Big Bang Theory please watch tonight at 930. I probably laugh more at this show than any other show on television.
k. I laugh probably the second most at Modern Family. I am a huge Julie Bowen fan.
l. I should probably finish reading Kingfish sometime this week. Yes Huey Long did a lot of good things for Louisiana but he was a tyrant.
m.I need to win the lottery so every weekend can be a three day weekend.
n. Great email from my best friends mom Jennifer Smoak who pointed out to me that Friday Night Lights will be on NBC starting later this spring. This show is way to good just to be on the 101 Network.
o. Due to my travel schedule I did not see one minute of the Golden Globes thus no thoughts. I apologize.

Quote of the week 1

Comes Todd "Fritzy" Fritz who called in after having gallbladder surgery. And yes he did say this on National TV and radio.

Passing gas has been more difficult.

Quote of the Week 2

Comes from Drew Magory and his open mailbag which runs on Deadspin every Tuesday.

The bottom of a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch is like cocaine. You get all that bonus sugar on top of the shit. They should sell the end bits of CTC as its own cereal. CTC, with quadruple sugar. General Mills would be sued for giving every child in America diabetes, but it would be so worth it.

Coming from someone who loves CTC, this quote is right on. You are a moron if you throw away CTC without emptying the crumbs into nice bowl of milk.

Text of the Week
Comes my friend Sarah (Not her real name)
How bout I just burned up the dance floor and now going to a strip club. Thats why I'm awe quite a bit. Bam!

Yes Sarah is Awesome or awe-quite-a-bit and I am proud of her.

Lane Kiffin, We Hardly Knew You

From Joe Schad's Twitter Feed
USC has hired Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin, sources say

ESPN'S Chris Low with more details
Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin has agreed in principle to become the next head coach at Southern California, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com’s Chris Low on Tuesday. Kiffin would replace Pete Carroll, who jumped to the NFL as coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Kiffin, the former Oakland Raiders coach, led the Volunteers for only one season. According to the sources, Kiffin will bring his father and defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, and assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron to Southern Cal with him, and wide receivers coach Kippy Brown will be named interim head coach at Tennessee.

WOW. Just WOW. I have know idea what Mrs. Brown looks like, I know it can not beat this......

At the end of the day, Knoxville and the State of Tennessee loses.

Coach's Update
Last year when Kiffin had a son he named him Knox. Also, when does 7-6 qualify you for one of the better jobs in college football?

Florida State's "Play Anyone, Anywhere" Mentality going by the wayside?

According to a recent Orlando Sentinel Blog Post Florida State will soon be eschewing it's more difficult Out Of Conference (OOC) foes for smaller/"easier" schools.  Having built our program on "Anyone, Anywhere" scheduling FSU is definitely gonna take some heat for this, and even though the competitive football fan in me doesn’t like it, I agree with it for three reasons:

1) I’m a season ticket holder and this past season only got 5 home games.  Plainly put, that was shit.  I want more games, even if it is Tennessee-Chattanooga.  In the end when I've got another Saturday In The South of 75 degrees, summer dresses in September and a fifth of Jack in the pocket what could go wrong?  I'll also get to see EJ Manuel, Jermaine Thomas, Jeff Luc, Greg Reid and all the boys pad their stats against a few cupcakes.

2) UF, Texas, USC, Ohio State, Penn State, etc… have long had a history of playing cupcake schools OOC and yet nobody says a word.  When we win 12 games, the ACC Championship and the Orange Bowl and finish 4th in the BCS no one is going to complaing about us beating Marshall instead of BYU (just like UF hasn’t gone out of state since 1994 for an OOC game.  Hello FIU once again!!)  Maybe if the team is that successful and EJ's had a few games to pad his stats, we might actually have some Heisman talk around Tallahassee once again.

3) Having worked in the business side of the sports world and understanding the influx of cash a home game has I am in full support of the university wanting to “cash in” on that influx more often.  The financial hardships of the economy have relaxed a bit over the past year or so but make no mistake they are still very prevalent.  As written in this article FSU has taken recommendations from the Board of Trustees to cut longstanding colleges from its academic offerings and take federal stimulus to get through these hard times.

A more in depth look at the recommendations follows:

Over the past 18 months, administrators at Florida State have cut enrollment, frozen positions and hiring, reduced travel, cut utility usage, reduced supplies and severely reduced the president's and six vice presidents' budgets. In addition to millions of dollars in cuts in administrative functions, the new plan recommends various changes in academic programs.
For example, these recommendations include:
  • In the College of Arts & Sciences, the geology department would be suspended as a separate department but could be merged with meteorology and oceanography into a new Earth & Atmospheric Sciences unit.
  • In the College of Business, The Dedman School of Hospitality and the Golf Management Program would come under separate accreditation from the college so they could be open to more students and become self-supporting.
  • The colleges of Communication and Information have merged into one, the College of Communication and Information.
  • The College of Social Work is exploring the possibility of merging with another college.
  • The College of Visual Arts, Theatre & Dance would restructure into three schools: Theatre, Dance and Art Design. The college would suspend its lighting program, scenic design, and Art Education B.S. degree.
  • FSU-Panama City will become self-supporting in three years. Its budget would be cut by 25 percent (although it would receive federal stimulus funds). It would suspend its Information Studies and resident MBA program except online and is developing a plan with Gulf Coast Community College to accept freshman and sophomore students, pending Board of Governors approval. Florida State will encourage students who are not admitted to the main campus to begin their studies at the Panama City campus, Florida State's "Campus on the Coast." Military personnel with honorable discharges or currently serving will be admitted to select undergraduate and graduate programs at Panama City.
  • The Ringling Cultural Center would be self-supporting in three years.
  • The Asolo MFA acting program also would become self-supporting.
  • The colleges of Education, Human Sciences, Music, Nursing and Social Sciences also would suspend or restructure some programs.
With an extra 1, 2 or even 3 home games there’s an extra 5-10 million that could be made that just might allow us to save the School of Hospitality next time around.

Combine all three of those aspects: More games for fans to enjoy, a return to national prominence, and better financial standing for the school we all love, I doubt many FSU fans will complain about Jimbo's decision to lighten the load.
