Below you will find 10 Quick Thoughts on the week. This weekend I had the Ten Things 75-80% done when Firefox crashed on me and I lost almost everything. I think I said the F word about 80 times the next few minutes after that mishap. Bobby Knight would be proud, my mom would not. Thus proving that machine will not hold man down here are my quick ten thoughts for the week.
1. On Thursday the Yankees turned their first triple play since June 3, 1968….Guess who turned the last one for the Bronx Bombers? That would be Braves skipper Bobby Cox, on a line drive to the pitcher who threw to him at third and he threw over to Mickey Mantle at first.
2. After watching Roy Halladay Wednesday night in Atlanta, I think 20 wins are almost guaranteed and I would not rule out 25. By the way the last pitcher to win 25 games was Bob Welch in 1990 and he won 27 that season. The last NL pitcher to win at least 25 games was Steve Carlton in 1972 for the Phillies. Lefty won 27 that season as well.
3. I watched two high school baseball games this weekend and I was so impressed by the coaching of both Northside-Columbus and Carrollton. Both teams play hard and do a lot of the little things that I love.
4. On Sunday I went to Montgomery I watched the Mississippi Braves play the Montgomery Biscuits. The Montgomery Biscuits might have the coolest name in all of professional sports. They also have one of the coolest stadiums in Minor League Baseball. Set in downtown Montgomery, Riverwalk Stadium It is built into an historic train station and has a capacity of around 7,000. Even the suites down the first base line are built into the former train station and they are very cool.
5. I watched Braves first round pick and former Vandy Commodore Mike Minor pitch. I absolutely love his change-up as it is one of the best I have scene. Fastball sat at 90-93 and he commanded both sides of the plate. Very impressive despite giving up 5 unearned runs.
Halftime: Congrats to Brice Scott for winning the trivia contest two weeks in a row. He will receive two tickets to a Braves game. One for his bodyguard (his son Hayden) and one for himself. Everyone that I know is proud of Brice for his efforts. Keep on keeping on. The song that Smoak and myself used to rock out to while cruising the streets of Sylvania was "Mr. Jones" by the Counting Crows. I had a lot of good baseball talk with Smoak, T-Mac, and the greatest kicker in Screven County History Donald Sheppard. Great stuff...what will we come up with to discuss this week? This weeks trivia question is: What former Calder Trophy winner for NHL Rookie of the Year was also the winning pitcher and MVP at the 1989 Little League World Series?
6. I saw the movie "The Losers" on Tuesday night. I thought it was really good and a lot of fun. I will not go as far as saying it was great but it is definitely worth a see. I think Roger Ebert describes the movie the best when he says, ""The Losers" knows what it's doing and how to do it.The movie gets the job done, and the actors show a lot of confidence in occupying that tricky middle ground between controlled satire and comic overkill. It's fun."
7. A couple of great reads from the week include Amy K. Nelson's look at Rockies president Keli McGregor who was found dead this week in his hotel room. Very good read on a tragic story. The second read is a profile of Oklahoma City Thunder GM Sam Presti. To find out what you need to know about Presti is this fact, when he was a player at Emerson College he once took six charges in a game against Daniel Webster College.
8. Last year, Patriots made 7 trades on draft weekend and 12 total picks. This year, Patriots have made 7 trades and 12 picks. How is Captain Hoody able to pull off such shenanigans year after year?
9. Why did the Panthers draft three quarterbacks? Granted one will play wide receiver but I think they saying goes if you have three quarterbacks, you do not have one quarterback.
10. On the way back from Montgomery we stopped by Auburn's campus to look at scenery and as we drove by Jordan-Hare stadium I could only think to myself I hope I never have to sit in the upper deck in this place. Steep and very tall. I am looking forward to going to the loveliest village on the plains next fall for my first football game at Auburn. Hopefully sitting on the lower level.
Quote of The Week
This weeks quote comes from a random person working out with Brett Michaels on the Celebrity Apprentice.
"You are in my top 5 celebrity passes"
On a side not if I were to ever get married I might agree to the celebrity pass. Who knows I might be in Brooklyn Decker's blogger top 5 celebrity passes. George Costanza was Marisa Tomi's type after all.

From New York Met fan Dan Hauptman to me after I sent him this stat while watching the Braves Sunday night: Braves are 1-14 with runners in scoring position in 14 innings past two nights.
Boohoo
I wonder how Dan likes the fact that the Mets have not thrown a no hitter and Nolan Ryan has thrown seven? For those that do not know Ryan was a Met for a couple of years at the start of his career.

Ten Things I Think I Think
Below you will find the Ten Things for the week. I apologize for not writing one last week but I decided to enjoy a minor league baseball game and the final round of the Masters. Next week look for an early look at the Kentucky Derby and a spring football wrap up. Is their anything you want me to write on? Have a wonderful week.
1. G-Day Wrap Up
Saturday nine days ago I attended my first G-Day and I can not imagine a better way to spend a Saturday than in gorgeous Athens, Ga on a Chamber of Commerce afternoon watching football and looking at the coeds. Georgia played each other so a Dogs win was guaranteed. For anyone that was in the Classic City last Saturday will agree with this statement, The coeds won.
I had a nice paragraph written about how good Zach Mettenberger looked and how he drilled the ball down the middle of the field reminded me of one Matthew Stafford. Then as I was driving home from an exciting Braves win on Sunday afternoon I get the news that Mett has been kicked off the team and I was in shock. Just unbelievable news.
Back to the scrimmage, Aaron Murray did not look as good as his stats had been in previous scrimmages. He still will probably win the starting quarterback job and I thought that before Mett was kicked off the team. You could tell Murray was trying to do to much instead of just playing QB. One thing that bothered me about Murray was that his interception was Joe Cox esque and those mistakes do not need to happen.
One other thought on the scrimmage was the play of the cornerbacks. They attacked the receivers and I do not remember one missed tackle. I was also excited the fact that not many receivers ran open despite the fact they were playing a new scheme for the first time. There were several plays where there were three receivers down field, all of whom were picked up and covered in textbook fashion (including picture perfect bracketing with a corner and safety combo). It happened frequently enough that they almost made it look – dare I say it? – routine.
2. Georgia Thoughts
I am still shocked over the news of Mettenberger's dismissal. From what I hear Mett was not completely honest with Richt when he told him about the news of his arrest. In addition there might be some more allegations coming out from the arrest. Not good, not good at all.
Speaking of not good, the UGA Baseball team is at an all-time low for the Coach Perno era and every time I thought the program had hit rock bottom he has them in the College World Series the following year. So hopefully 2011 will be a very special year for the Diamond Dawgs.
All news out of Athens is not bad as the Equestrian team won a National Championship and the Men's Golf team won a SEC Championship. Congratulations to those coaches and athletes.

5. Baseball Thoughts
a. Through the Braves first 9 games Martin Prado had 17 hits. That tied an Atlanta record held by the great Dale Murphy and Deion Sanders. Yes, Neon Deion. Somewhere Tim McCarver is not happy.
b. Last Sunday Roy Halladay threw the 50th complete game of his career to defeat the Astros. Halladay's 50 CG are the most among active pitchers.
c. The Angels will fly 50,509 air miles in 2010, more than any other team. The White Sox will fly 22,832, the lowest number.
d. 16 players have hit more home runs this year than the Astros who have three through 12 games.
e. As near as I can tell from baseball-reference, Ubaldo Jimenez is the first pitcher ever to throw a 9-inning no-hitter and also balk. Stats like this make me love baseball even more.
f. On Thursday Tim Hudson beat the Padres despite having 5 BB & 0 K's. It was the 9th time a pitcher won with 5+ BB & 0 K's since 2000.
g. In his 1st 16 games with the Cubs, Jeff Samardzija had an ERA of 0.93. In 33 games since then (beginning 9/1/08), his ERA has been 7.77.
h. The Red Sox have lost 4 straight and are 4-8, their worst record after 12 games since 1996 (2-10).
i. Kevin Kouzmanoff had three errors for the Padres at third base last season. His replacement, Chase Headley, had made four already entering Saturday.
j. Last season, after his first two starts for the Red Sox, Brad Penny was 1-0 with an ERA of 11.00 after having given up 11 runs on 11 hits, seven walks, three homers, while striking out three in nine innings of work. This season, after his first two starts for the Cardinals, Brad Penny was 1-0 with an ERA of 0.64 after having given up one run, on nine hits, two walks, no homers, while striking out eight in 14 innings of work.
k. Including postseason and today's win vs. Tampa Bay, Andy Pettitte of the Yankees is 11-2, 3.24 in 18 games started since 8/9/09.
l. Last season, the Red Sox were the only team without an African-American on their roster. This year, the distinction belongs to St. Louis, San Francisco, and Kansas City.
m. I love the look of new Target Field in Minnesota. The fact they have a fire pit in the left field seats is even cooler.
n. The Orioles went 0-6 in their opening homestand, 2nd time in Baltimore history they went winless on an opening stand of 3+ games (1977, 0-3)
o. Since 1970, the ERA of non pitchers is 7.85 in 183 IP with 0.5 K:BB ratio
p. How amazing was Saturday's Cards-Mets game? It started at 4:00 and I was able to see first pitch before leaving for a tailgate before the Braves game. Watch Ubaldo no hit the Braves. Get home about 1030 and see last couple innings of Cards-Mets.
q. I hate seeing stats like this, Within three days this week, the Orioles, Indians and Blue Jays all drew the smallest crowds in the history of their current ballparks. In 1995 those clubs ranked 1-2-3 in AL attendance. Last season in AL attendance they ranked 13-9-12.
r.Trevor Hoffman has allowed 8 extra base hits this season. He allowed 7 during the entire 2009 season.
s. As of Thursday Adam Dunn has 11 walks this season, David Wright has 10. And the Houston Astros have 6.
t. Entering Sunday's games, Braves leadoff hitters ranked last in the major leagues in hitting at 3 for 46 (.065), according to STATS, Inc. Diaz matched that with three hits in his third game hitting leadoff.
u. One more stat from the Cards-Mets game on Saturday; it was not the longest game that the two teams have played. The longest game between the Mets and Cardinals was on September 11, 1974 at Shea Stadium, which the Cards won 4-3 in 25 innings.
Halftime: This week's song that Smoak and myself used to rock out to while cruising the mean streets of Sylvania was Dolphin's Cry by Live. Two weeks ago Brice was the first to respond that Dusty Baker was on-deck when Hank Aaron hit number 755. Former roomdawg Allen Daley also knew the right answer and he included this awesome paragraph about our legendary days at the Polo Club: This trivia question first appeared b/t the hallowed walls of polo club. Probly close to the time when t-mac was sidelined for two weeks following a keg stand malfunction that you were involved in, and I was fortunate enough to catch on video for future entertainment. BTW, I heard that carpet finally dried out about two weeks ago.
This week's trivia question: There are now three teams that have not pitched a no-hitter in their history. Name them.
6. Jackie Robinson Thoughts
On Thursday MLB celebrated the 63rd Birthday of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier. In honor of Jackie every player on every team wore #42 on Thursday and I thought that was an awesome tribute. Here are some numbers about #42 that have the number 42. Thanks to Billy Ball for some of the Robinson stats.
a. Mariano Rivera is currently the only player in MLB that wears #42. In 1997 MLB retired #42 and players who were wearing the number were grandfathered in and allowed to keep the number. Rivera is the only #42 still playing.
b.The next to last #42...Mo Vaughn
c. In 1947, Jackie was baseball’s first Rookie of the Year, an award that is now named for him.
d. Jackie ended up with 748 games playing second, 256 games playing third, 197 games at first, 162 games in the outfield, and one game at short.
e. Jackie Robinson was the first athlete to earn letters in four sports at UCLA playing football, basketball, track, and baseball.
f. Casey Kotchman and Yorvit Torrealba each struck out 42 times last season.
g. In 1947, Johnny Mize struck out 42 times while hitting 51 homers.
h. Jackie never struck out more than 40 times in a season.
i. Jackie’s first hit was a bunt single off the Boston Braves’ Glenn Elliott. Robinson bunted 42 times, collecting 19 hits, during his rookie season.
j. Robinson Cano was named in honor of Jackie Robinson and wears uni #24 (the reverse of 42). He also hit a home run on Thursday.
k.Jackie Robinson was the first African American inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962, but the second Robinson. Wilbert Robinson was inducted in 1945, Frank Robinson in 1982, and Brooks Robinson in 1983.

8. Seeing the Fog roll in at Veteran's Field in Chatham, Ma (This should probably be ranked higher)
9. Tuesday Practice Round in Augusta
10.2008 NHL All-Star Weekend
I know I am forgetting some awesome sports memories, what am I missing?
9. What I Read This Week
This week Sports Illustrated has an awesome look at Braves right-fielder Jason Heyward. The more and more I watch him play the more I am impressed. He has so much talent plus Sunday's walk off at-bat was a very good at bat considering it came against a lefty throwing 96 MPH. The SI article was written by Tom Verducci so we know it is AWESOME. Another good read on Heyward comes from the Philadelphia Inquirer. I love the fact that he call Chipper, "Mr.Jones".
A third read comes from the SI Vault and takes a look at Jackie Robinson's first two months as a Major Leaguer. Written by William Nack he looks at the 17 days when Jackie proved that he belonged in the Major Leagues.
10. Non Football or Baseball Thoughts
a. I saw a trailer for the movie Get Him to the Greek and it looks like something I will see one or two times this summer.
b.Get Him to the Greek is based on the Aldous Snow character from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Aldous Snow was the rocker played by Russell Brand in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This looks very funny.
c. Has anyone seen Hot Tub Time Machine? If so what are your thoughts? I may try to go next Sunday.
d. Food for thought: This recipe for Pad Thai is the third most e-mailed story today on NYTimes.com
e. Why did I think that was important?
f. I absolutely loved the fact Luke Bryan was on The Apprentice last night. Hard to believe I saw him in person in December at the Capital City Club in Milledgeville.
g. Yes, the Capital City Club is the infamous club visited by a certain Steelers quarterback.
h. "24" looks like it is going to close its run with a bang. Back to back weeks we have had a silent clock to end an episode. Back to back weeks I have sat in my chair in shock as the episodes ended.
i. Are we ever going to get a new episode of The Office? When was the last time we have seen a new episode?
j. I really miss How I Met Your Mother on Sunday Nights/Monday Mornings at 1:00. Great way to wind down from an awesome weekend.
k. Speaking of How I Met Your Mother, it has been very average the past few episodes. It's about time for Ted to meet his kids mothers.
l. Tommorow I have a screening to the movie The Losers. I think it could be pretty good.
m. I would love to get a pass to Iron Man 2. Good chance I go see this movie at midnight the day it premieres.
n. I watched a good bit of the Academy of Country Music awards. Carrie Underwood is just awesome. Unbelievable how talented she is, I have a hard time believing she would have not been a star even without American Idol.
o. Why does Reba keep showing up?
p. I also have to be excited for Lady Antebellum considering band member Charles Kelly is from Augusta and went to UGA. He even gave a shout out to Augusta, Ga.
q. Hillary Scott the female member of the group is absolutely gorgeous and I think next week I am going to have to rank my favorite women in Country Music. I can not wait to do my research over the upcoming week.

Quote of The Week

Wrapping up the ACC Basketball Season
James Gober, a Duke fan and Atlanta resident, sends out ACC Basketball Reports throughout the college basketball season. These reports are extremely well researched, extremely informative, and at times includes some good laughs with the analysis. In order to wrap up the 2009-2010 ACC Basketball season James's latest report included final power rankings for the season, a look at departing and returning players for each ACC team, and a look at the recruiting efforts and rankings of those recruits for each team as well.
This report is pretty exhaustive but is loaded with good information, I'd advise reading it throughout the day and not taking it to the porcelain god for fear of health complications. If there's one thing that is pretty apparent throughout this report it's that Duke better enjoy the spoils of 2010 while it lasts because North Carolina is going to be really good, really soon. Enjoy!

"The ACC 2009-2010 Season Final Basketball Report contains an early look at how the rosters of the 12 ACC teams will change for next season and this reporter gives a very early prediction for ACC teams in the text below. For each team, you can see which players are departing seniors or transfers who have left and which players are likely to leave early for the NBA Draft. Also, you can see the new players who will be added for next season, with the ESPN rating for incoming players next to their names in addition to the usual RSCI and Prep Stars rankings. Players who rate 96 or higher are great prospects in the ESPN ratings, 93-95 is very good, and 90 or above is solid. (Note* ESPN ratings are not as accurate as RSCI and Prep Stars generally).
Before previewing next season, however, this neutral reporter must applaud the 2010 National Champion Duke Blue Devils. Not only did Duke win the championship game by easily outscoring the Butler Bulldogs in both halves of the championship game, but the Devils managed to keep the TV audience riveted to their sets so that Duke haters everywhere were given the false illusion that the Devils actually might lose the game. According to a national study, Duke is the most hated and most loved college basketball team in America. That fact may surprise ACC fans, since they all love Duke. In any event, the ACC now has 2 of the top 5 teams in terms of total NCAA Basketball Championships, as shown at the end of the attached Report, and 2 consecutive National Champions. Also, the ACC rebounded from a relatively poor showing last season to finish with as many NCAA Tournament wins as any conference, including the overloaded and overrated Big Least.
With the 2010 championship, the ACC has claimed 5 of the past 10 national championships and 8 of the past 20. By comparison, the SEC has 2 in 10 and 5 in 20, the Big East has 2 in 10 and 3 in 20, the Pac 10 has 0 in 10 and 2 in 20 (having last won in 1997), the Big 12 has 1 in 10 and 1 in 20, and the Big 10 has 0 in 10 and 1 in 20 (having won in 2000). It was 21 years ago that a team not from one of these 6 power conferences won the championship, that team being UNLV. UNLV defeated Duke in 1990 only to be gutted by the Devils in the Final Four the following year. Duke has 4 national championships in the past 20 years, UNC has 3, and Maryland has 1. Duke and UNC set the standard for the ACC, but Maryland in 2002 and other teams during the past 20 season who figured how to compete with Duke and UNC built teams that could compete with anyone. Duke and UNC will be the measuring stick next season, and several other ACC teams may do what Maryland did this season and rise to the top of the ACC. The supposedly weak but very competitive ACC will be stronger next season, and this reporter has rejected offers from other conferences such as the Big South, Atlantic Sun, and Big Least to switch his allegiance and write about their conferences instead of the ACC. Now way!
The prospects for the ACC and many of its teams will depend greatly on which players enter the 2010 NBA Draft through the Early Entry process, which has been changed dramatically for the better this year. Players must declare by April 25, but they must remove their names from the Early Entry list by May 8 or they will lose their collegiate eligibility and not be able to return even if they withdraw from the NBA Draft later for some reason. Several players who have not declared officially for Early Entry status yet are listed as departed players on the attached Report because they are more likely than not to go pro. Besides the issue of who will leave, it is not settled as to which spring recruiting season players will be added to ACC rosters during April and May. Also, there always are transfers over the summer for some ACC teams. Thus, the label "early look" perhaps should be changed to "very early look."
The final Sagarin ratings and rankings give a good idea of where each ACC team ranked nationally as of the end of this season. The final ACC standings reflect the ability of teams to win on the road and to protect their home courts and are the starting point along with Sagarin for predicting how next season will go. Overall, you can expect the ACC to have a better shot at having Top 25 ranked teams nationally.
Duke will remain among the Top 10 teams nationally and will be among the Final Four contenders if Kyle Singler returns. The player losses are great, but so is the incoming talent. Kyrie Irving is a terrific point guard and Seth Curry will score the ball. Maryland lost the players that were its heart and soul, including ACC POY Greivis Vasquez. Even so, the Terps have a solid nucleus of experienced players returning and some good player additions who will not let the team fall in the ACC rankings as far as some may expect from its finish in a tie for the top spot in the ACC standings. If Solomon Alabi returns, FSU will have as much talent overall as any ACC team and will be a solid Top 20 team. The player additions by the Noles are as good as any in the conference, and the team size only gets bigger unless Alabi departs. The Hokies could be a national Top 25 team if Malcolm Delaney withdraws from the NBA Draft, but they will be very good even if he does not return. The Noles can be expected to pass the Terps in the standings, and the Hokies will have an experienced team that will be able to challenge the Terps.
Wake and Clemson may be headed down a few places in the standings. The Deacs lost a lot of their core players, but they have a very solid recruiting class that will arrive to provide some help. The Tigers lost Trevor Booker and several other key players and have only one recruit to join the returning players. If they lose their Coach, they may drop more than otherwise expected. Both the Deacs and Tigers will be good, but they may a step behind the teams that finished in the top third of the ACC this season. Georgia Tech may lose most of its talent, but the Jackets almost always play their best when they are underrated and worst when they are supposed to be at their best. The Jackets will be good, but they will not be good enough to compete for a finish among the top 4 ACC teams. If Al Skinner had not departed, BC might be a pick to move into the top level of the ACC standings. All of the starters return for a team that underachieved this season. The Eagles may have enough talent and experience to rise into the top third of the ACC next season, but it depends on who their new coach will be.
The Hoos have a large number of promising recruits, but Virginia is the pick to drop to the bottom of the ACC before it begins to establish its new identity under Coach Bennett. The departure of its best player, Sylven Landesberg, for the NBA Draft really brings the Hoos down. UNC has 3 more great recruits to add to its current roster of great recruits, but the news for the Tar Heels is much, much better than any pessimistic fans may expect for next season. Harrison Barnes is a Grant Hill type player (which is a huge compliment), Reggie Bullock is a great shooter and scorer (not to be confused with the current quality of UNC shooter and scorer), and Kendall Marshall will provide solid point guard play regardless of whether he replaces Larry Drew as the Heels' starter. Unless the inexplicable happens again, the Heels will be a national Top 10 team (as your reporter predicted for this season) and compete for a place in the Final Four (as your reporter also predicted). State adds 2 great guards of a much higher caliber than its other recent recruits and will improve to the point that the Pack can be expected to challenge for a place in the middle of the conference instead of the bottom. Finally, the Canes emerged as the team of Durand Scott at the end of the season, and they also will compete for a place in the middle of the conference.
Predicted Finish: (1) Duke, (2) UNC, (3) FSU, (4) VA Tech, (5) Maryland, (6) BC, (7) Miami, (8) GA Tech, (9) State, (10) Wake, (11) Clemson, and (12) Virginia. Picking the top 2 is easy, but 3 through 6 and 7 through 11 are tough. Until next season.
Hoopfully yours, Verbal Kent (from "The Usual Suspects"): "The greatest trick the Devils ever pulled was convincing the world they might not win. And like that... Duke wins it all and becomes the 2010 NCAA Basketball National Champion."
